ME 218 A - High Noon Shootout
Fall 2010
For my 218 A project, my group and I decided to build a western shootout game. We wanted to recreate the standard western shootout scene where all the action takes place down the main street of the town. We used small motors to pop bad guys out from various hiding spots at random times. We bought a toy gun and retrofitted it with a laser and a vibration motor. Every time the trigger was pulled, the motor would vibrate and the laser would be activated. We also added a solenoid that would strike a beer bottle each time you pulled the trigger (nice sound effect). Each bad guy had a phototransistor on his chest, such that when properly aimed, the laser would set off the detector. The laser had a very narrow beam and we were afraid that the game might be either too difficult, but in the end the difficulty ended up being just right.
All the wood work and most of the mechanical components were build in the PRL. As you can probably tell, all the intricate woodwork was done using the lasercam. The project turned out to be a lot more work than we expected but in the end it was definitely worth it.
